Spent a wonderful day and evening with Leonard's family in Montreal,
Quebec!
Leonard and Christiane drove us around the city and visited St. Joseph
Oratory, Mont-Royal, Old Montreal, City Hall,
Old Port of Montreal, Notre-Dame Basilica, downtown underground shopping
network, and Chinatown. Enjoyed
a delicious Quebecois lunch, plus breakfast and dinner prepared
by Leonard/Christiane. Thanks to Leonard and Christiane
for their hospitality! Enjoyed a great visit to Montreal. Another week
long trip to Montreal is being planned.
On the way back to Boston, a sit-down lunch with Eddie Chan Siu Ki was
planned. Due to time shortage, the lunch
meeting was changed to a McDonalds in Woburn Mall (Woburn, MA) for
a quick 30min lunch before heading to
Boston Logan airport.
Thanks to Leonard, here is his detailed write-up about the visit.
The white Ford Escape SUV arrived in the
driveway just about 6:50pm
Sunday, May 4. Kelly and Salina emerged from
the car and were greeted
by me and Christiane. Even though it has been
30 years, I have seen
Kelly and Salina's recent pictures on Kelly's
web site so I had no
problem recognizing them. The reverse might not
be true.
Anyway, both Christiane and I were very excited
and happy to see them
arrive early and safe. Driving in Montreal is
not easy, and is often
further complicated by the ever-ending road
constructions (more like
destructions). BTW, Kelly has put up some pictures of this visit on
his site. You can go see what we look like these days.
Here are some highlights of their stay:
-Kelly looks taller than I remember. In fact he has more hair than
during the Wah Yan days. Is that a miracle or what?
-Kelly brought with him the Wah Yan '72 yearbook. That gave me a
chance to revisit people and things from days past that had quietly
escaped my memories.
-Looking at Kelly and Salina, it's hard to believe that we will all
be turning 50 in couple years. At least during their 2 day visit, I
felt like 19 again. That may indeed be the true reason for our
excitement over these reunions: to feel young again.
-Kelly and Salina both learned a few French words, and they can
surely use them back in California since Spanish and French are very
close.
-Kelly and Christiane love cooking, while Salina and I both enjoy
eating. During their visit, we were already talking about future
trips: their return to Montreal for a longer trip so we can all
explore the area together; and our visit out West in the Bay area.
Perhaps we can stir up interests among other Wah Yan boys for some of
these get togethers.
-All four of us enjoy travelling. On their way to Montreal, Kelly and
Salina stopped over at Vermont to visit the von Trapp estate (family
in the movie Sound of Music), and they gave us a book on the family
history. Incidentally we were just in Austria last September and we
visited some sites where the family lived before they moved to the
US. So we took out the old photo album to reminisce. We even talked
about travelling together in the future.
-On Monday, May 5, we drove to visit various places in Montreal; and
had a good lunch in Old Montreal. For more details, see pictures on
Kelly's web site. Their visit was short but sweet. We had some time
to fill each other in on all the ups and downs of the last 30 years.
I swear that if we all write down what we had gone through in the
last 3 decades, it would be quite an interesting book.
-It must have been the old Wah Yan magic. The weather was exceptional
great during their visit: 20C and sunny. In fact we all had a bit of
a sun burn. The day after they left, the temp dropped to 13C and it
rained all day long.
-I think we all truly enjoyed this short visit, and I am certain that
our spouses (Salina and Christiane) were quite amazed at how quickly
we become comfortable and friendly with each other after a 30 year
separation.
-We are now anxious for other reunions with the old boys and their
families. Too bad the Toronto reunion in June has to be postponed
indefinitely for now. May be we can have a smaller scale get together
some time this summer in the Bay area. Anyone interested?
