Class72 30-Year Reunion
16 November 2002
Shing Hin Restaurant, City University of Hong Kong

Last Minute Preparation

Kelly Chang joined Simon and Jamie Cheng at their office in Kwun Tong for the last minute preparation for the evening gathering.  Simon was busy making the last minute telephone calls urging former classmates to attend.

Visit to WYCHK

Kelly and Simon rushed to WYCHK at 2pm for the afternoon tour of the school campus and visit of Jesuit Fathers who reside at the school. It was a rainy afternoon and no 72'ers were in sight. Simon and Kelly walked around the campus briefly, stopping at the music room which experienced fire damage about a week ago.

Fr. O'Rourke, who was Simon's Form5 headmaster was available to sit down with Kelly and Simon for about 30 minutes. Fr. O'Rourke was quite energetic and did not seem to suffer any hearing nor eye sight problems common among the seniors, considering Fr. O'Rourke is 78 years old. Fr. O'Rourke talked about his early days when he first came to Hong Kong in 1950 that he was supposed to go to China. Due to the political situation then (1949 Revolution and Korean War) that forced him to stay in Hong Kong. Kelly and Simon also enjoyed the memories brought back during the conversation, especially involving Fr. O'Rourke's teaching. In 1972,  besides being the form master of 5B1, he was also Kelly's Bibilical Knowledge (B.K.) class teacher.

Last Second Preparation

Simon and Kelly returned to Kwan Tong after the visit to WYCHK to finish off the last minute preparation. Thanks to Jamie Cheng help, name tags and souvenirs were ready for final assembly and autograph signing by the time Kelly/Simon returned.

Evening Gathering at CUHK

Simon, Jamie, and Kelly arrived the Shing Hin Restaurant around 5:30pm. All three were busy on logistics, from setting up the registration area to karaoke station configuration to interfacing with restaurant workers.

Sung Nee was the first to show up followed by David Li Chung Hung. Shortly after, the first former teacher Mr. Chen Pat Yuen, who taught use Form5 chemistry arrived. Kelly was busy taking pictures while Simon greeted former classmates and teachers who started to arrive shortly after 6pm. Everyone was excited to see former classmates whom many had not communicated since our graduation! Former classmates were busy taking pictures while others caught up with things during the pre dinner cocktail hours. WIth more and more attendees showing up crowded the open area, the restaurant service managers informed his service personnel were unable to serve cocktail beverages to attendees as the room was literally packed. Fr. Deignan and Mr. Wong Chung Tai arrived around 7:45pm, all attendees were asked to take their seats at their choice of four dinner tables.

The dinner program began around 8:00pm with the introduction of the seven VIPs (former teachers) . Each VIP presented a short speech  (Fr. Deignan, Mr. Raymond Yu, Mr. Vincent Lee, Mr. Adrian Lee, Mr. Fung Kam Sang, Mr. Wong Chung Tai, and Mr. Chen Pat Yuen) about their view of the reunion.  The first dish of the dinner was served around 8:45pm immediately after the prayer led by Fr. Deignan.

After dinner, all attendees stood up and sang out school song. The group photo session followed. After the photo session, some attendees waved good bye to their classmates while others continued on their conversation. Mr. Raymond Yu, Simon Cheng, and Francis Liu stayed behind and sang a few songs. Unfortunately, the karaoke system provided by the restaurant had some configuration problem resulting in less than optimum acoustic quality. The event concluded around 11pm when the last guest exited the restaurant. Kelly and Simon's job was not over, they returned to Simon's office in working on the digital pictures that they took at the event. Kelly had no problem staying up late as he was still on California time :-). Besides, he could sleep on his flight back to San Francisco the next morning.

Postscript
Many thanks to our seven VIPs. We were very honored that they spared their time in attending our reunion. Many signed the autograph booklet. Also thanks to WYCHK Principal Tam who provided the telephone numbers of Mr. Chen Pat Yuen and Mr. Wong Chung Tai. Sung Nee contributed pictures for the making of this web page. Without any question, we are indebted to our reunion chief Mr. Simon Cheng, who spent numerous hours in organizing, designing the souvenir and contributing pictures.  "You folks set such a standard that would make other wahyanites work extra hard in organizing future reunion events" as remarked by Mr. Vincent Lee. "I am impressed that you are able to gather so many classmates and teachers, given such a short time" as commented by Mr. Raymond Yu. We appreciate the compliments. Most importantly, key credits should go to all the classmates who attended. The success would not have been possible without their participation. We look forward to another successful gathering next June in Toronto, hope to see you all there!
